This is a hard question to answer. I am going to hit it at from a bunch of different angles. My first comment will be about assumption. If you read through the post, everybody is assuming the strong slow guy has no technique. Why is that? Well because 99% percent of that time you see a strong slow guy throw.....he has no technique. What if that guy trained technique only, maintained strength and speed, what would happen? I believe his throws will get better AND his would "look" faster. When you have no technique, everything slows down because your energy is being extended on every axis. When there is good technique, the energy put into use where it should be, and naturally the implement will move faster. Now the assumption is he is faster/quicker(yes there is a difference) when he could have done nothing but better technique.
What if this guy maintained strength, trained speed, did not work on technique. Will he throw farther? probably, and he will look faster. But now I feel for anybody close to the throwing area cause he will probably have no idea where it is going. Now what if he got stronger, didn't get faster or work technique. Will he throw farther? Yes. He could possibly look "faster" since the extra strength will help him control the implement which allows him to put more force(=speed) on the implement. So which is better? An average strength thrower with elite speed? or an average speed thrower with elite strength? with technique being equal, i think its pretty close to a draw, with speed edging to win out. In my opinion the speed guy will win the OS, LWFD, LH, HH, Sheaf. Strength guy will win Braemar, HWFD, Caber, and WOB. So my answer? Like what was stated earlier: train whatever you don't have. But i believe speed kills, so if you have a good platform for strength already, and the choice is get stronger, or get faster....get faster. Oh, and always always always train technique, I think that would get a better result then the other two. To add an experience: when I was in college, one of my team mates was a world champion power lifter as a kid(18 and under) through his first 2 college years, his coach let him do his power lifting workouts. He was a low 50's shot putter, 275lbs hang clean, struggled to jump onto a 24" box. We got a new coach our Jr. year(around Oct), and he made him stop the power lifting and do the coaches workouts. By April, his hang clean was over 350lbs, he could jump on a 48" box, and was a high 50's putter, got into the 60's around june. And his bench, and dead lift stayed about the same. So.....yes its easier to train a fast twitch muscle to be strong. but its not impossible to go the other way. |

![]() Adriane? Scott, I apologize: Josh Baur, my nephew, cannot make it. Apparently the young man just got himself engaged and he's already losing ground in the decision making in his life. Actually, his wife to be works most weekends and when she doesn't they are together. Can't blame him for that. |

Mark,
I think that a dozen Madsen doughnuts is the perfect way to start a diet. I hope they were as good as you hoped. |

Ken you have inspired me to drop a few pounds in honor of my 45th birthday in October. Maybe we can have a pose down at Heavy Haloween...minus the speedos of course. Lucas I just ate a dozen Madsen Doughnuts in your honor yesterday !

If we have enough interested women to make a class then yes we will have a class for them....but we would let the women throw even if there were just one or two and throw the womens weights....
